How to choose an AI visibility tracker
Updated November 1, 2026
Short answer: Pick a tracker that asks the engines your buyers use, lets you track the questions they actually ask, shows the full answers and the sources cited, compares you with named competitors over time, and fits your budget per question. Test it on a free plan or a free check before you sign a contract.
The two kinds of tools
Dedicated AI visibility trackers are built only for this job (for example Profound, Otterly.ai and ChatKeywords). They tend to go deeper on questions, answers and citations.
SEO suites with AI add-ons (for example Semrush and Ahrefs) put AI tracking next to rankings and backlinks. Good if you already pay for one and want everything in one place.
The checklist
- Engines: does it cover ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode? Are Gemini and Claude included or extra?
- Questions: how many can you track, and does it help you find the right ones, or must you write them all?
- Real answers: can you read the full answer behind every number, with its sources?
- Citations: does it show which sites AI cites instead of yours? That list is your to-do list.
- Competitors: does it show who is named instead of you, by topic, over time?
- Stable scores: AI answers vary. Look for a rolling score over several weeks, not a number that jumps every run.
- Google data: can it put AI results next to your Google rankings and Search Console clicks?
- Access: API, exports and client reports if you are an agency.
API answers or scraped chat screens?
Some tools collect answers through each AI provider’s API; others scrape the chat apps. Scraping can match what a signed-in user sees more closely; APIs are steadier and easier to repeat. Neither is wrong, but a good tool tells you which it uses for each engine. ChatKeywords uses each provider’s API and labels it that way.
What it costs
Prices range from free plans with a handful of questions to enterprise contracts. Compare on cost per tracked question per engine, not the headline price. For reference, ChatKeywords is free for 5 questions on 4 engines, then $29, $79 and $249 a month for 50, 150 and 400 questions.
Test before you buy
Take 3 questions you care about and run them through the free AI visibility check. Then run the same questions in any tool you are considering. If its answers, competitors and sources look nothing like what you see, keep looking.
